We all are mosaics of experiences—epic and mundane. The steps we make in our life journey are worth celebrating! So, let us gather here while physically apart and share a moment of our life stories using the six-word-story writing prompt.
Inspiration for this post came from an online writing workshop with Dasha Kelly Hamilton and special guest Benjamin D. Rinehart called Life, in Short. Over the course of five weeks, participants worked to distill their life stories into a manageable memoir of moments. Dasha said it best by saying that Life, in Short is a little bit memoir, a little poetry, and all about your life.
In the first session, the group of 60 participants watched a video of Larry Smith (watch his video here) speaking about six-word memoirs. Smith mentions that, “everyone has a story, but you have to remember to ask.” After showing the video, Dasha asked the group to “tell me about your lunch” using just six words. Stories shared that evening evoked laughter, tears, curiosity, and confusion.
Consider this your invitation to shamelessly join in the celebration of our unique lives and share six-word stories about yourselves in the comment area.
Try it!
Step 1
Start by opening a tab to write on your computer or grab a piece of paper and a pen.
Step 2
Then, think about the highs, the lows, the loves, and the lessons you have learned over the years and write a few down.
Step 3
From that list, start to capture those moments using just six words. When you are ready, choose one (or a few!) to add in the comments area below.
