“Return to the Real” Time Capsule

Pick-up a kit free from the Social STUDIO during the Arts Center’s open hours.

Reflecting on the past year or so, how did your daily habits change and adapt to keep yourself and others safe during the COVID pandemic? How did other aspects of your daily routine change – what you wear, the amount of TV you watch or books you read, and how you connect with others?

The “Return to the Real” Time Capsule is a moment to reflect on the past year and make physical ideas or activities that are not always tangible. You can create your time capsule independently or as a group with others in your COVID bubble using materials of your choosing.

Inspiration for this project comes from the JMKAC exhibition High Touch, which includes the work of six artists who embrace technology as a medium and a tool to create highly tangible objects that transform the virtual into the physical.

Create Your Time Capsule

STEP 1
The kit available in the Social STUDIO comes with a box to use as the time capsule, a brainstorming booklet, a small notebook, and a pencil. If you are unable to come to the Arts Center and already have these materials at home, feel free to use those instead! A digital copy of the brainstorming booklet prompts is available for download in Step 2.

STEP 2
Think about, gather, and create what you will put inside your time capsule. Use the prompts inside your brainstorming booklet to help spark some ideas. There are also images of an example time capsule a JMKAC staffer created at the bottom of this page.

Some of the prompts suggest listing or writing, while others offer opportunities to take a thought or digital idea and make it something you can touch. Get creative, have fun, and remember this project is just for you.

STEP 2.5
As you’re think about what will go inside the box, consider also how you can use the box to show your ideas too. You could glue things on the inside or outside, cut away areas of the box using a sharp tool, or embellish it with methods such as collaging, painting, or doodling.

STEP 3
Find a safe spot and leave your time capsule to sit. If you use a calendar, turn forward a few years and write down “open time capsule” as a reminder. If you do not use a calendar, maybe try putting it in a place where you might forget about it, but will eventually come across it sometime in the future.

Below is a time capsule and its contents that one of our JMKAC staff created. May it be of inspiration as you brainstorm and create yours!
