Where is your hometown?

______________ is My Hometown

Take a moment to reflect on your hometown, wherever it may be. This prompt is inspired by artist Isabel Castro, who is designing a mural for the Social STUDIO inspired by the prompt, Sheboygan is my Hometown. Read more about Isabel and her project here.

What you will need
A sketchbook and the materials you want to journal with. Consider doing drawings, writing, and collaging to document your thoughts and feelings about the prompt.

If you don’t have a sketchbook already, consider making one! Here are two upcycled sketchbook options.

  1. Follow along as Liz Rex shows how to make an upcycled sketchbook from materials you may have.
  2. Stop in the Social STUDIO at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and pick up a free STUDIO Sketchbook made from a discarded folder, elastic band, and black drawing pages.

Step 1
Gather your materials.

Step 2
Read through the list of questions Isabel created to help generate ideas.

Questions to Consider:

  • What is a home? Tap into your five senses:  What feelings are expressed here? What smells remind you of this home? What do you see when you step in or out?
  • What takes place in this location?
  • What cultural traditions exist in this place you call home?
  • What personal routines or rituals have you developed here?
  • If someone comes to your hometown, what would you share with them?
  • What colors resonate with how you feel about this home?
  • What has changed, what has existed, what is new?
  • What do you bring to this home of yours?
  • What sounds come to mind as you remember this place? Are they manmade sounds or from nature?

Step 3
Grab your materials and document your thoughts and feelings in your sketchbook. Try breaking it down into shapes, colors, and descriptive words.
